Early Days

In its earliest days, the HELP Association did not have its own space for operating its thrift shop. Maxine Kern, the original vice president, offered to let HELP use space in her store, Maxie’s Dress Shop. In 1974, Dorothy Dowell generously agreed to rent a building to HELP for a few dollars per year, allowing virtually all of the Thrift Shop’s revenues to be used to advance its mission. Upon Mrs. Dowell’s death, HELP Association, Inc. purchased the building  from her estate, ensuring that the organization has a permanent home and can continue to support the community.
